"Great Big Rolling Railroad!"

"We're a Great Big Rolling Railroad..." Apparently the Coyote Mountain Slide on the Union Pacific's passage over Willamette Pass is about to be reopened.

I spotted this news release on the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainman's web site, with an independent verification from tonight's newscast on KEZI-TV in Eugene. And, following my training as a former radio news director, I sought out a third independent source, to substantiate this information.

Still, no official word on the UP corporate website, nor the AMTRAK website.

It will be two weeks shy of 4 months that the Union Pacific was shut down by a devastating land slide on January 18th, which, because of its location on a horseshoe curve, severed the line not once but twice.

To put things at the slide in perspective, the red circle on the photograph, to the right of the slide, encircles two pickup trucks! And that's just the upper severance; the lower severance in off screen at the bottom of the slide!

It will be some time before the numbers are in, but this had to have been a very expensive experience
for the Union Pacific!
